Weekend Backpacking
Packing for Comfort and Safety
Regardless of your expertise in hiking, efficient packing is a very important aspect of your hiking or backpacking experience. You’ll want to pack the essentials plus some extras and the combined weight can be quite heavy if you are going for a weekend backpacking or a multi-day hiking trip. It is important to minimize and evenly distribute the weight while maintaining comfort and safety.
You will need a backpack to store all your supplies when you hit the trails. There are various internal and external frame models suitable for hiking. They help in moving the load from your shoulders to your hips smoothly. Invest on a comfortable, cushioned backpack with hip straps and that is adjustable to your size.
While a tent is a necessity if you are staying overnight, carry a size that is just fitting. It should not be larger than required. Buy one that is durable enough to accommodate severe weather and high winds, as well as keeping you warm and dry. To minimize your backpack weight, pack a small and light sleeping bag. Check on the temperature rating, which should be ten degrees more for you to estimate what it can provide. Usually, the warmer it is, the bulkier and heavier it becomes.
Invest in a couple pairs of cargo pants. These are good items because most of them come with sizable side pockets where you can carry some of your items and they are lightweight. Depending on your trip, a pair or two are enough. Throw in a couple of thermal shirts. These are also lightweights and are great for cold nights.
The people going together on a backpacking adventure may not all have the same interests. Some might be after the tranquility of the forest or mountain whereas others may want to have a mixture of music and noise. Carry your personal listening device (small lightweight ones that take very little space), in addition to your earphones to avoid disturbing the rest of the group.
Look for multi-purpose equipment and gear for your backpacking journey. There are some very good selections for multi-function light weight gear. No need to exceed your budget. Many sports stores offer good quality hiking equipment and camping gear at reasonable costs if you give yourself time to compare the prices.
You can minimize your pack weight without compromising your safety and comfort. Figure out your essentials, pack light, and have fun on the trails!
