Hiking vs Gym

Top five reasons why hiking beats the gym

Hiking is a great outdoors activity that makes me feel alive in every sense of the word. There are some people that are die-hard gym junkies, but I just don’t agree. Hiking is great exercise for the body, and honestly it is better than a gym workout will ever be. Here’s my top five reasons why a hike is always the better option of the two exercise choices.

Hills

There are natural hills in nature no need to waste precious time trying to program that treadmill to the inclines and declines. Just start hiking outside, the hills are built right in and chances are that there is more variation in incline than there will ever be in a treadmill workout.

Nature

The average person spends far too much time indoors on a daily basis. We are supposed to be outside enjoying the fresh are and beauty of nature, instead we are inside cramped up in tiny cubicles and then when we do get up off our butts we are yet again inside at the gym. Why not switch it up and still get the workout in by going outdoors instead?

Inspiration

Being out in nature brings a whole new perspective to everything, it is easier to be inspired to keep on going with a tough workout when the scenery is constantly changing rather than staring at a wall in the gym.

Membership Cost

Gym memberships can get pretty pricey. If nothing else saving money is a good motivator to take a hike considering that the average gym membership is about fifty-five dollars a month. This means the average person paying for a gym membership spends six hundred and sixty dollars per year trying to stay in shape. While there may be an initial investment in hiking gear, that gear will last for years to come and it is much cheaper than the almost seven hundred dollar a year gym membership.

Tone Naturally

A person could spend hours at the gym toning every single muscle of their body. Hiking is a much more steady exercise that, yes will leave muscles sore. But that muscle is gained much more evenly and through what can be considered functional training rather than isolating and toning a muscle or groups of muscle that don’t have too much functionality.

Hiking is better than the gym in all aspects. Doesn’t it just sound better to get outside? And doesn’t it sound so much more efficient to get cardio and toning in all at the same time? Hike it up!
