Hiking Alone or in a Group

Hiking alone gives you the utmost freedom, tranquility, and privacy of doing the outdoor activity without having to adhere to the needs and rhythm of a group. While many people prefer the companionship and social interaction of a group there are others who treasure the peace and solitude of being alone on a hike. However, as a matter of safety especially with amateur hikers it is advisable not to hike alone.

Walking in a group offers a huge advantage. First and foremost – safety. If you get hurt or became sick, your hiking buddies are there to assist you with first aid, or even carrying you. Somebody is available to keep you company if another needs to go find help. If you are alone and need help you might be lucky for someone to bump to you at the perfect timing. Would you want to depend on sheer luck?

It is always a good idea to study the environment of where you intend to hike so that you will have a fair idea of what to expect. However, as an amateur hiker if you forget to do your homework the group organizer will have the information beforehand. A group provides you with a safe training bubble as a novice and added security even for a veteran.

Your shared responsibilities make hiking in a group more attractive. Everybody has a talent, and it is during this group hiking that you are in a position of utilizing them. It means that you do not have to perform all the duties especially if you are also camping; e.g. collecting firewood, setting up the camp, cooking, administering first aid, and cleaning up after eating. It offers you ample time of resting, recollecting your thoughts, and absorbing all that nature is offering you.
As you discover new things during your outdoor activity, you will as well meet new people. You will not believe all you can offer each other in terms of culture, food, fashion, etc. Every person reacts differently from different extreme conditions, and it will be a learning point for all.

Despite all these reasons if you opt to hike alone, let it not be your first hike. Make sure you have had various walks within a group. Be sure you are equipped for the risks once you recognize and identify them. Handle them accordingly as well.

Since you are prepared to fight yourself solo against nature, you need to develop a safety net in case of an emergency. It starts by informing somebody of your whereabouts, how you are getting there, how long you are staying, and when you will be coming back.
Never change your plans without informing them. Hand them a copy of your hiking route. If there are no relatives or friends close by, inform your local authority about your plans. Do not start your journey without telling. Follow your human character and communicate with anybody at home regularly. Be aware of all the risks involved in hiking and that includes human predators.

Additionally, engage in friendly conversations with other hikers. Do not ignore your innermost gut instinct if you do not trust anybody. Make the most of your hiking now that you decided to do it solo. Go back home with a feeling of satisfaction and happiness rather than the other way round.
