Family Hiking
Tips for Family Hiking
Family hiking is a great way to spend some quality time with the kids whether they are teens tweens or toddlers.
We all look forward to vacation time with our children but sometimes it becomes difficult to decide where to visit next because it seems like we have gone to all of the exciting places on the planet e.g. hotels, amusement parks, towns, beaches, etc.
How about going on a day hike with the kids the next time you want to do something different as a family? Time spent enjoying and absorbing nature’s attractions is an excellent way to improve family relationships. It is refreshing and peaceful to both parents and children.
Hiking with the youngsters is a remarkable way for them to learn about and respect Mother Nature at a tender age. Although it might be intimidating when planning the trip for the first time, it will be well worth the effort. Getting your children out for a hike is a great start in teaching them about nature and wildlife conservation, strengthening family bonds and creating a lifetime appreciation of the outdoors.
Maximize your hiking vacation with your family
For first timers, find a trail that is not too strenuous and not excessively long. Note that the hiking is about an experience for the whole family. Choose an impressive trail that will keep the children busy and have a memorable experience. If they want to get down on all fours, or roll downhill like a drum, it is their experience for the hiking.
Familiarize yourself with the hiking environment e.g. the weather, terrain, wildlife, plants, caves – anything to do with Mother Nature. Do the relevant research about the particular trail that you intend to explore. Ask your friends who have had the experience.
Load the children’s backpack with the appropriate energy food because hiking uses up a lot of energy. Plenty of water and carbohydrate-rich snacks are preferable as they replenish energy and keep the stomach full and they are easy to carry. Fruity and nutty bars are remarkable. Take frequent energy stops to avoid having cranky, exhausted children.
Hiking shoes and boots must be on your shopping list prior to your hiking adventure. Everyone should wear proper hiking boots because they will inevitably bump their toes on roots or rocks. Pack all-weather clothing. Children are more prone to catching colds than adults. The tip to easy hiking is dressing in layers of clothing. It is easy to take off or put on one by one, as the weather fluctuates.
It is advisable that everyone remains within eyesight and earshot on the trails. Dress in bright colors for ease of spotting each other among the vegetation and engage in frequent communication for safety. Don’t forget sunscreen and insect bite repellent.
Teach your kids to treat life with kindness. Wildlife remains in the bush. Therefore, do not allow them to sneak any creature from the forest to your house. Emphasize the value of cleanliness in the environment. Take only pictures leave only footprints. Teach them how to be responsible hikers.
With these few tips, and others that you will learn as you go along, have a wonderful time with your family on your hiking vacation.
