Camping is great way to spend some time with nature. Not only do you get to enjoy the beauty of the day time while possibly out on a hike, you also get to enjoy all the sights and sounds of the evening and night times. There are always challenges that come with camping, but with some knowledge of the basics, your next trip is sure to go more smoothly. It is always good to research the environment before you go. Bring the right equipment and be aware of some general guidelines for a good camping experience.
Make a list for camping
Making a list and packing the right equipment will ensure that you have all the essentials to enjoy a camping trip. Obviously, the tent needs to be brought along. But, aside from the obvious, there are other things that need to be taken on a camping trip as well. Think about what you are going to eat, cooking and eating utensils, sleeping bags, blankets and extra warm layers of clothing. Make sure there is at least a small first aid kit packed along should anything happen. Bring a flashlight so you will be able to see things at night. This short list is really only the beginning. If you are going on longer camping trips, you will find yourself packing more things in order to be more prepared.
Choosing your tent location
You can have all of the right equipment and be camping in a decent location, but without some basic camping tips, you won’t have a very great experience. If you need to hike to get to the location you will be pitching your tent, make sure that you are alright with hiking on the chosen terrain. Pick a nice level spot that is clear of any unevenness for the most comfort. A rocky or uneven surface would be very uncomfortable to sleep on. Make sure that you are not setting your tent up in an area that collects rain. Observe the pattern of debris on your chosen spot. If it is an area where water runs or settles when it rains, the debris pattern will give a good clue. That would be a spot to avoid. Think also about what natural hazards are in the area. Sometimes there are certain kinds of plants like poison ivy in the area, or risk of falling rocks. Do your research beforehand and pay close attention to your environment.
Campfires and forest fires
Make a nice campfire, but use caution. A careless fire increases the risk for a forest fire, which is danger to yourself anyone in the vicinity and the environment. If you are going to be storing your food with you, be sure to hang it above the ground that way no animals can get into it. If you are going into an area that is likely to have bears, you can also invest in a bear-proof container to keep them out. Most of all, just remember to have fun while you are camping. Avoid having lanterns or burning candles inside a tent; they give off poisonous carbon monoxide emissions plus the added risk of starting a fire.
Camping is all about being out in nature, relaxing and enjoying the sights and sounds and feelings. Take time to explore and enjoy everything your camping area has to offer. Go on a few hikes and if the area permits, do some rock climbing as well or simply just kick back and chill. The point is, do whatever is going to make you happiest while you are camping and enjoy your time while you’re in nature.
