Getting Started

Montagne d'Argent

On the trail to Montagne d’Argent

Starting hiking isn’t really hard at all. After making sure that you are equipped with the proper equipment, pick a short trail if it’s your first time, grab a friend and the rest is a breeze. Just being out in nature and enjoying yourself is what hiking is all about. The essentials that are needed for a successful first hiking trip will include:

Layers of clothing

Layering clothing is always a great idea. Every hiker should be prepared for all kinds of weather. Pay attention to the forecast and dress and pack accordingly.

Wool Socks

Now that you will be getting your first pair of hiking boots, you will want to invest in some nice wool socks. The beauty of wool socks is that they keep you nice and cozy in winter hiking conditions and in summer they absorb sweat away from the feet to keep them dry.

Sturdy Hiking Boots

If you are going to take up hiking you will want to consider investing in a good sturdy pair of hiking boots with plenty of traction. Look for something that is going to be good in varying conditions, has good internal padding for comfort and has a pretty thick sole for extra protection.

Water

Water is a must for hiking. Expending energy and sweating means that you will need more water than usual. Dehydration takes a toll on the muscles. If you are going on a longer trip consider investing in a travel water filter. Otherwise, pack a couple of bottles of water for a day trip.

Energy food

A long hike always requires some sort of snack. Without the proper fuel, a hike becomes needlessly stressful and difficult. For a short hike pack a light lunch, a granola bar and a fruit. If there is a longer trip in store make sure to pack enough food and to put it into baggies to help minimize the amount of room it would take up with packaging.

First Aid Kit

A first aid kit is always essential to travel with. Without a first aid kit, you are pretty much just helpless even in the case of minor injuries. Always pack this to make sure that you have quick fixes should anything happen while out hiking.

Binoculars/camera

Part of being out in nature is being able to see and capture things from a distance. Getting a good pair of binoculars and camera will be beneficial. You can enjoy the wildlife from afar and bring back spectacular view to add to your memories.

Backpack

Once you’ve ensured that you have all you need, (don’t pack unnecessary stuff) you will want somewhere to put it. I recommend organizing it all into a backpack to make the journey smoother. The backpack that you choose should have a sturdy exterior preferably waterproof and be big enough to hold everything that you need it to hold, but not so big or heavy that it is difficult to carry for long distances.

Keep these essentials in mind as you get ready for your first of many hiking trips and happy hiking!
